FIRE
Written by Bruce Springsteen

I’m driving in my car
Turn on the radio
I’m a holding you close
But you always say no
You say you don’t like it
But I know you’re a liar
Coz everytime we kiss
OOOHHHH fire

It’s late at night
And I’m a taking you home
I say I wanna stay
You say you wanna be alone
You say you don’t like it
But I know you’re a liar
Coz when we kiss
OOOHHH fire

You got a hold on me right from start
Nothing in the world could tear it apart
My nerves are trembling, acting like a fool
My hands are shaking but my heart stays cool

Romeo and Juliet
Samson and Delilah
And baby you can bet
True love they didn’t deny
Your words they hurt
Oh but your words they lie
Coz everytime we kiss
Oooh Fire

UPTOWN

He gets up each morning and he goes downtown
Where everyone’s his boss and he’s lost in an angry land
He’s just a little man

But then he goes uptown baby to my tenement
Uptown where the folks don’t pay much rent
And when he’s there with me he can see that he’s everything
He walks tall, he don’t crawl, he’s a king.

Downtown he’s just one of a million guys
He don’t get no breaks and he takes all he’s got to give
He’s got to live.

But then he goes uptown where he hold’s his head up high
Uptown where he know’s I’m standing by
And when he takes my hand there’s no man who can put him down, down.
He walks tall he don’t crawl he’s a king
Whoa whoa uptown
Don’t say nothing bad about my baby etc.

SHADOW OF DOUBT
Written by Johnny Britton

I dreamt last night about you
I was just about to
Get to you, but you got away
The sun came up, too soon today.

Something’s happening in the air
It’s in the space, behind your stare
Something’s happening I don’t know what
It might be heaven and it might be not
You’ve been seen in shady places
Holding hands with nameless faces
You may think I’m not that clever
I put two and two together oooh.

I got a shadow of a doubt
Ooooohh without a shadow of a doubt.

Something’s happening in your smile
Laughing at me, all the while
Something’s happening I don’t know what
It might be heaven and it might be not

You’ve been seen in shady places
Holding hands with nameless faces
You may think I’m not that clever
I put two and two together ooooh

I got a shadow of a doubt
Oooohhh.

Now he’s ringing on your bell
You tell him that your life’s a living hell
When he’s not there
And now he’s walking through my door
And with him goes my every hope of happiness
No doubt no more.

Oooohhh without a shadow of a doubt etc.

These 3 songs were recorded at GBH, Steve Street’s Studio, in 1979. Astonishingly I have absolutely no recollection of making this recording at all! At the time Wendy Partridge and myself (along with Wendy’s sister Sarah) were the backing vocalists for The Spics. Fire and Uptown were two songs that were included in The Spics live repertoire and sung by me, but this recording has Wendy on lead vocal. Shadow Of A Doubt was written by original Spics guitarist John Britton and I do have a memory of him teaching me this song. At the time I loved John’s 50’s style songs and I had obviously had asked if I could record this one. Amazingly for me, (who cringes at all old recordings) I still love this song and it makes me smile to hear my teenage rendition of it! (My, how my voice has dropped over the years :~) I think this recording was made very early on and has all the original Spics line up (bar Mike and Sarah), so Thomas Brooman on drums, Nick Sheppard and John Britton on guitars and Rachel Morgan on bass.
