Taz Harlem was formed in 1986 by Pete Din, Nigel Davies, Gary Davies (rhythm guitars), Simon Watkins (drums). They soon became a constant presence on the Bristol rock scene through the late 80s. Regular gigs at the Bristol Bridge Inn and the Bierkeller among many others polished their live performances into a tight cohesive sound emulating the west-coast feel of American rock popular at the time.

1988 saw a number of line-up changes with the addition of previously unknown vocalist Mike Blakemore (a partnership with bassist Nigel Davies that was to last for many years) and seasoned veteran Mick Kirton ( Hawkwind, The Groundhogs, Dumpy’s Rusty Nuts) behind the Kit. Their reputation for solid catchy songs and an energetic stage presence led to their popularity as a support act for high-profile touring bands including several slots with Irish brothers Mama’s Boys and the offer of a German tour. The band didn’t ever part company, but mutated, with the addition of second guitarist Paul Godbert in 1991, into the nucleus of Voodoo.
